The short answer

How do you calculate a business loan payment?

Use the standard amortization formula: the payment that repays the principal plus interest in equal monthly installments over the term. A $100,000 loan at 9% over 5 years costs about $2,076 a month and roughly $24,550 in total interest. Fees and variable rates change the real cost.

Amount, rate and term show the size and cost of the borrowing. High rates suggest alternative-lender offers worth comparing; large amounts relative to the business need affordability analysis.

Payment versus total cost

Monthly Payment is the cash flow impact. Total Interest and Total Cost show what the loan costs over its life. Longer terms lower the payment but raise total interest.

Compare offers on both measures, plus fees.

For the firm

Why firms should see loans before they're signed

Debt shapes cash flow for years. A firm that reviews terms, models affordability and checks covenants protects the owner and strengthens the relationship.

It also feeds into tax planning: interest deductibility and asset purchases.

Follow-ups this request opens

Terms

Terms your client sees in the calculator

These definitions appear in the calculator's collapsible Definitions block, so clients don't have to call to ask what a label means.

Monthly payment
The fixed amount due each month that repays the loan amount plus interest over the term, assuming a standard fully amortizing loan with level payments. Many business loans follow this structure, but some use interest-only periods, balloon payments or daily and weekly remittances, which this calculator does not model.
Loan amount
The principal your business borrows and must repay. Lenders size it against cash flow, collateral and credit history. If the lender deducts an origination or packaging fee from the proceeds, the business receives less than this amount while still repaying all of it, which raises the effective cost.
Interest rate
The annual percentage the lender charges on the outstanding balance, before fees. It is not the same as APR, which folds in certain costs. Business loan rates vary widely by lender type, collateral, time in business and credit profile, and some are variable, tied to an index such as the prime rate.
APR
The annual percentage rate: the yearly cost of the loan including the interest rate and certain lender fees, spread over the term. It allows a fairer comparison between offers with different fee structures. This calculator uses the interest rate only, so a loan with fees will cost more than the figures shown.
Loan term
The number of years over which the loan is scheduled to be repaid. Equipment and working-capital loans tend to be shorter; real estate loans tend to be longer. A longer term lowers the monthly payment but raises total interest, so the choice is a trade-off between monthly cash flow and total cost.
Amortization
The schedule by which each payment is split between interest and principal until the balance reaches zero. Early payments are mostly interest; later ones are mostly principal. Some business loans amortize over a longer period than their term and end with a balloon payment of the remaining balance.
