Projections clients run,
assumptions they can see
Retirement, RMD, Roth and investment calculators where the client chooses the assumptions and the page explains the method and limits, the way the SEC Marketing Rule's treatment of interactive tools expects.
Can an RIA put retirement calculators on its website?
Yes, many do, with care. Under the SEC Marketing Rule, adviser-presented projections can be hypothetical performance; the adopting release treats an interactive tool clients use to run their own scenarios differently if the adviser explains its criteria, methodology, key assumptions and limitations, and that results vary. Review your setup with your CCO.
A compliance checklist for client-run tools
- Client chooses return and inflation assumptions; defaults are documented
- Methodology described on the page (constant returns, no Monte Carlo)
- Limitations listed: taxes, sequence risk, fees
- Statement that results vary with inputs and over time
- No link from a projection to a specific product
- Records kept of the calculator pages as published

Questions firms ask
Are calculator projections hypothetical performance?
Adviser-presented projections can be; client-run tools with the right disclosures are treated differently. Your CCO decides how your firm applies it.
Can we set default return assumptions?
Yes, and document how you chose them.
Do calculators recommend investments?
No. The asset allocation calculator gives an educational guideline only.
Can we use testimonials alongside?
The Marketing Rule allows them with conditions; we don't provide any.
Do the calculators keep records?
Leads are stored in your account; archive your web pages per your books-and-records policy.
Which plan do RIAs need?
The retirement and investment calculators are on every plan. Practitioner (free) runs 5 at once; Firm runs 50 with webhooks and white-label; Network has no cap.
Can we brand the calculators?
Yes, white-label on Firm and Network.
Are state-registered advisers covered by the SEC rule?
No, state rules apply.
