Social Security wage base
Definition
The Social Security wage base is the maximum amount of earnings subject to Social Security tax in a year: $184,5002026 · SSA for 2026. Wages above it owe only Medicare tax, so high earners see larger paychecks once they pass it.
How Social Security wage base works
The SSA adjusts the base annually with national wage growth. It also caps the earnings counted toward future benefits.
For the self-employed, W-2 wages count toward the base first, which reduces Social Security tax on self-employment income.
Why it matters to a firm
It explains mid-year paycheck changes and affects S corporation and solo 401(k) planning.
